Summer high temperature warning, will LED display screens face the risk of power cuts? What will be the impact?

Jul 24, 2024

As the weather gets hotter, many industrial, commercial and residential users have turned on the air conditioner, which also indicates that the summer electricity peak is getting closer. During the peak summer period from 2021 to 2022, some parts of my country experienced power restrictions of varying sizes, and 2023 was smooth and stable. So, what will happen this year? In the public's impression, most electronic products are afraid of being in extreme environments, such as extremely low or high temperatures, which are like a "death warrant", which not only limits the performance of the product, but also damages the internal components. LED display screens are no exception and need to deal with the "test" from high temperatures at all times. So when the peak electricity consumption comes this year, how can companies minimize the impact of power restrictions?

Summer high temperature warning, will LED display screens face the risk of power cuts? What will be the impact?

The risk of power restrictions still exists, and LED display screens are still under pressure

In the summer of the past two or three years, many places in China have experienced extreme high temperatures, droughts and other climates, which have triggered a "power restriction" storm, which has had a certain impact on the production and operation of the manufacturing industry, especially small and medium-sized LED display screen companies are facing serious "production reduction" problems, and its impact will continue to affect the future development plans of these small and medium-sized enterprises.

Looking back at last summer, the national maximum power load increased significantly, an increase of 80 million kilowatts compared with 2022, and the power supply was in a tight balance. Many provinces are facing tight power supply. Some provinces have taken measures such as peak power rationing to cope with the power gap. For example, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Anhui, Guangdong, Yunnan, etc. have implemented power rationing measures during the summer peak period according to their own power supply and demand conditions. After the implementation of power rationing measures in the past few years, the normal production and operation of many screen companies have been seriously affected. I believe that many business owners still remember it.

Focusing on whether there will be power rationing this summer, industry insiders believe that it may be in late July or early August or local high temperatures may lead to insufficient power allocation, which will cause the chemical industry to "power rationing" in stages, but it must be implemented in specific regions. According to the comprehensive judgment of the National Energy Administration, during the peak summer period this year, the national power supply is generally guaranteed, and there may be tight power supply during peak hours in some local areas, mainly Inner Mongolia and some provinces in East China, Central China, Southwest China, and South China. If extreme and disastrous weather occurs, the tight power supply situation may be further aggravated.

This means that the risk of power rationing still exists, and LED display screens may be affected. Huicong LED Screen Network has also noticed that in recent days, power grid companies in many regions have deployed summer supply guarantee work or announced peak summer load management plans. Chongqing Power Grid has also put into operation this year's first peak summer supply guarantee project to prepare for this still stressful summer.

What impact will high temperature have on LED display screens?

As soon as summer comes, LED display screens encounter headwinds.

As we all know, if outdoor LED display screens are to be used normally, they need to be within a certain temperature range, usually between -20℃ and 65℃. In fact, extreme high temperatures above 65℃ are relatively rare. After all, even ants can't survive for more than 3 seconds at this temperature. But please don't forget that in addition to the external high temperature, the LED display screen itself will also generate heat. The LED display screen is composed of tens of thousands of lamps. These dense pixels will not only emit light, but also generate heat. When running for a long time, the heat itself will be very large. Coupled with the external high temperature, the overall temperature of the display screen will rise. At this "explosive" temperature, frying an egg is just a piece of cake. If the LED display itself has poor heat dissipation, then all aspects of performance will decline, which can be said to be a ripple effect.

Summer high temperature warning, will LED display screens face the risk of power cuts? What will be the impact?

Therefore, the operating temperature of the LED display has a certain upper limit. When the temperature exceeds the bearing temperature of the chip, it will affect the display effect of the LED display. Specifically, the impact of high temperature on the LED display is mainly in the following four aspects: obvious light decay; reduced luminous efficiency; caused by cracking of the packaging material; affected the wavelength of light emission.

Take light decay as an example. After a period of lighting, the light intensity of the LED will be lower than the initial light intensity and cannot be restored. The reduced part is called the light decay of the LED. In layman's terms, human life is measured by time, and the life of the LED display is measured by light decay. Under normal circumstances, light decay has a certain time limit. In Internet jargon, this is called the product life cycle, and an extremely high temperature environment is equivalent to an accelerator of the product life cycle, which will speed up this process.

In fact, there are many reasons for the light decay of LED displays, but the most critical one is the heat problem. In addition, high temperature will have a negative impact on the packaging materials and light color of the LED display. For example, the packaging materials of LED modules are mostly epoxy resins. The use temperature of this material generally does not exceed 125℃. When the temperature exceeds the threshold, it will quickly go on strike, causing the LED display to crack and fail. In addition, under different temperature conditions, the brightness attenuation and decline of the red, green and blue lights are different. The white balance is normal at 25℃, but at 60℃, the brightness of the three colors has decreased, and their attenuation values are inconsistent, so high temperature may cause the brightness of the entire screen to decrease and color cast. It can be seen that the impact of high temperature on LED display screens cannot be ignored.

What are the countermeasures for LED display screens?

So, in the face of power rationing risks and the impact of high temperatures in summer, does the LED display industry have its own countermeasures? The answer is inevitable.

Nature has shackled LED displays with high temperatures, but now with the development of technology, this chain is gradually being broken. The heat dissipation design of LED display screens has become mature, and the heat dissipation performance of the display screen mainly depends on the product itself. For example, in terms of the material of the body and substrate, you can choose high-quality aluminum with high heat dissipation, or fill the plastic shell with thermal conductive materials during injection molding to improve the heat conduction and heat dissipation capacity of the body; add heat dissipation components to the LED display; for example, setting a cooling fan around the LED lamp beads can increase air flow, quickly take away heat through efficient heat dissipation, and reduce the temperature of the LED chip. The optimization of product materials and the improvement of structural design can ensure that the LED display is not powerless in an irresistible high temperature environment.

At the same time, energy saving is also one of the trends of LED displays. In recent years, common cathode technology has taken an advantage in energy saving. It can reduce the common cathode voltage of red LEDs to reduce system power consumption, reduce the temperature of the screen, and make electronic components have higher reliability and longer life at relatively low temperatures. It has more advantages in ultra-small spacing and Mini/Micro LED applications.

In addition to the above-mentioned measures, how to break the public's stereotype of high power consumption of LED screens under the background of dual carbon and energy conservation, and make LED screens truly more energy-efficient, is a difficult problem that the entire LED screen industry needs to solve. This is not only related to the quality of LED screen products, but also to the future of sustainable development of the LED display industry.

The peak of summer electricity consumption is coming, and orderly electricity consumption policies will be introduced in various places. LED screen companies need to plan in advance and use more scientific methods to reasonably plan energy consumption to avoid affecting normal production.
